The Ice Caves...Almost
By Kayla Bainbridge

“Just a little farther” he promised as the whole car lurched forward over another rock. I didn’t realize that the ride to the ice caves simulated the Indiana Jones ride at Disney World. My sister in law had arrived the night before from Elko Nevada and we thought the ice caves would be perfect. Little did I know that the road leading to the ice caves appeared to be an off roading adventure, not a Ford Taurus simply trying to remain intact. Dirt covered the car as we attempted to dodge rocks and brush. Our faces cringed with every scrape and dip over the mountains, but we were fine they said. As the road continued to get worse (who thought that was possible?) my husband relinquished the driving to his friend. He had been bragging that he had the most experience driving. With the cocky smile, the “expert” continued on and said again, “just a little farther.” The next turn looked like jaws of the ground opening to swallow the car, but he pushed forward. This time, we heard a crack. We stopped the car and all got out to see the car gushing precious liquid onto the heartless rock. I smiled one of those, “I told you so,” smiles as I looked around at the desert landscape surrounding us. No one had phone service so we decided to just walk until we could find a signal. The “expert” apologized and whipped out his survival backpack. This was what he considered heaven on earth. I did not feel the same. Even though it was in the middle of the day he made a small fire, while I played solitaire on my phone. After two hours our savior arrived and towed the car out of the mess we were in. Till this day, I still haven’t seen the ice caves.

'The round-about'
I have found that there are many attractions that are indigenous to Rexburg…or at least to the areas surrounding it. There’s “R” mountain, monkey rock, the Tetons’, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone and the taco bus. But as a poor college student, my time and funds have always been somewhat limited. I know I could always hitchhike, but then there is the concern about getting back home, cold temperatures, and the random (but possible) threat of wild animals. But there was one day–this one really great day—that I happened upon the cure-all for school related lethargy.

A view of the perfect doughnut round-about'
It all started on a Thursday, I went over to my friend Burke’s apartment. We had been doing homework for hours and had decided to seek each other out hoping to find a much needed and deserved distraction. We sat on his couch listening to his roommates’ banter, watching as they cooked dinner, and mocking the ensuing havoc of their rapidly burning food. But, as we began to ping pong back and forth the timeless, “what do you want to do...I dunno what do you wanna do,” we ultimately halted each other by either the restriction of time, money, or a general lack of interest.  So, we decided to hop in the car and drive around searching for a plan of action. As we left, Ben called out, “hey, grab some doughnuts!” And BAM, just like that the new round-about popped into my head. When we decided to go and make some free doughnuts of our own, we found another car, red, beat up, and already spiraling around the statue encircled round-about. We caboosed behind this car and quickly formed a common bond which came to unite us many more times in our homework-ridden-adventure-seeking futures.
